3000m Steeplechase - Golden Gala Rome
It was with a belly full of butterflies that I stood on the start line at Stadio Olimpico. Technically this of course was not my first steeplechase of 2018, having competed at the Commonwealth Games back in April, but in a hope to manage what is likely to feel like a never ending season of racing I shall refer to here on out at the summer season!
After the Commonwealth Games I headed off to Potchefstroom for a 4-week training block, and it was time to put that work to the test over the barriers.
Arriving at the warm-up track I was literally blown away by how beautiful it was! There’s no mistaking that you are racing in a place steeped in history, and to be honest it feels like a real privilege to be there. Felt a million miles from Loughborough!
On what was a gorgeous, hot, Italian evening, I lined up with a HUGE field of FAST ladies, and for the first time felt like I belonged on that Diamond League start. A big step forward for my personal development as an athlete.
Given the size of the field the first 1km was pretty congested. I am still working on my confidence when racing in a big group over barriers, and some scrappy, rookie racing on my behalf showed this. Something for me to work on for the rest of the season for sure!
The race spread out naturally, and I started to find my rhythm, spending the second half working my way through the field. I didn’t quite have the change of pace in the final lap, but still managed a tiny PB and came home in a time of 9:32.08. Not a bad way to start my summer campaign!
There were lots of positives to take from this race, but needless to say it was far from perfect, and that is great! There’s plenty of little changes that I can focus on working on with my team over the coming months. Golden Gala was an incredible meeting to be a part of, and Rome has placed itself firmly on my list of places I NEED to revisit on off-season so that I can enjoy all the pizza and ice-cream!
I have just a few days to get myself recovered, and then it is go time again in the 3000m steeplechase this time at Oslo Diamond League!
